Alexander Sorloth's four goals inspired Villarreal to battle back from behind to earn a 4-4 draw at home to La Liga champions Real Madrid.

A much-changed Real side had led 4-1 at half-time after goals from Joselu and Lucas Vazquez in between a brace from Arda Guler.

But former Crystal Palace striker Sorloth, who scored his side's first goal before the break, added three more in the first 11 minutes of the second half to help Villarreal earn a point.

Sorloth's goals, against a Real side that did not include Jude Bellingham or Vinicius Jr, moved him two goals clear of Girona's Artem Dovbyk at the top of La Liga's scoring charts on 23 goals, with one round of games remaining.

Real took the lead in the 14th minute when Guler finished off a well-worked move, with ex-Stoke City forward Joselu heading across goal at the end of Vazquez's cross to double Real's lead on the half-hour mark.

Sorloth halved Real's lead shortly before the break with a header, but a minute later the visitors hit back with two goals, Vazquez converting after a clever Brahim Diaz flick before Guler got his second in first-half injury time.

In the hope of salvaging something against Carlo Ancelotti's side Villarreal, boss Marcelino Garcia Toral made a triple substitution at the break, bringing on the experienced trio of Francis Coquelin, Raul Albiol and Bertrand Traore.

The move paid off for the Yellow Submarine, who cut their three-goal deficit thanks to Sorloth. The Norwegian's second of the match also came from a header, before he added two left-foot strikes to level the contest.

A point for Villarreal ends their hopes of qualifying for European football next season, sitting eighth and four points off Real Betis in seventh with just one game to go.

Real's attentions remain on their Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund on 1 June.
