When there is a change in cabin pressure...

If you have ever flown on a plane you may remember the part of the safety instructions that goes something like this.

"If there is a change in cabin pressure oxygen masks will be released from the compartment above. Pull on one this will start the flow of oxygen to the mask. Place it over your nose and mouth and breathe normally. If you need to assist others remember to put on your own mask first before helping others."

The first time I ever really thought about what they were saying I was a little shocked and thought "... wow that is so selfish." After greater reflection and conversation with flight personnel made it clear why. If I cannot breathe and I am trying to do strenuous work I will pass out and then there will be another person in need of assistance.

So for anyone who wonders where I have gone.... I've placed the oxygen mask over my nose and mouth and now working to breathe normally.

Save yourself first to be able to save others. It's taught in a basic physiology class and every first responder course.

I find your analogy quite intriguing because I am a pilot who used to fly commercial jets for a living, and you assessment is completely correct. Speaking of airplanes, have joined the "Mile High Club" yet?
