At school, we had to line up in the gym after a detention for the cane, but we all had shorts on, and it was JUST 6 strokes.

All we knew at the time was it hurt; but I realised that the cane he used was one used on much older teenage boys in borstals. My Dad was similar - very involved with my us, but very strict. For example, one punishment he used was to make us go for a 3, 4 or 5 mile run each morning for say 2 weeks - we had target times and if we failed to meet them, he used the strap and/or cane to make his point. We also got caned at school (late 60's), but at school it was a maximum of 6 strokes on shorts/trousers - at home it was always 12 strokes minimum and we had to go to our rooms, strip naked, and face the wall hands on head waiting .
