Royd's story

I'm Andrew, and I have to admit that I realized too late what happened to Royd, my partner. Royd was always the more thoughtful one between us, deep and full of worries about the state of the world. Our small farm was his refuge, but even here, he couldn't escape the world's pain. It broke my heart to see how much he suffered, not only from global crises but also from the fear that I might leave him because of his constant complaints.

Royd found some comfort with our cattle in the barn. I thought it was the peace and simplicity that attracted him. But what I didn't know was that he saw in the cattle, which had become massive muscle masses due to growth hormones, a form of silence that he desired so much. These animals, reduced to their physical existence, without worries, without thoughts, seemed to him to be an ideal.

I saw Royd change. He became calmer, seemingly more content, and his physique developed in a way that I can only describe as breathtaking. I thought he had found a new passion in bodybuilding, a healthy distraction from his thoughts. I encouraged him, not knowing what was actually happening.

One day, I could no longer ignore that something was wrong. Royd was no longer the person I knew. Our conversations had become shallow; he spent every free minute in the barn, away from me. Driven by concern, I finally followed him and discovered the shocking truth. I found Royd injecting himself with another dose of cattle hormones. The sight took my breath away.

The words he spoke then pierced my heart like an arrow. Royd confessed to me that he envied the thoughtless existence of the cattle. He didn't just want to be like them; he wanted to become one of them, completely rid of his humanity. The idea of living as an inflated muscle cow seemed to him the ultimate goal. I could only listen in horror as he fantasized about a bullring through the nose and an ear tag, signs of his complete surrender of humanity.

Desperate and angry, I left the barn, unable to deal with the situation. But when I had composed myself and returned, I found Royd in a state that made any communication impossible. He had injected himself with the rest of the hormones and was now completely absent, a vacant smile on his lips.

I faced an impossible decision. Taking Royd to the hospital was out of the question. My shame was too great, my certainty that no one could have helped him come back. So I fulfilled his last human wish. I set up a box in the barn for him, equipped him with a bullring and an ear tag. It was the least I could do for him.

One day, as I was tending to the cattle with hormones, I saw a spark of longing in Royd's eyes. Without really thinking, I gave him what he desired. The quiet "thank you" he murmured was the last human sign I received from Royd.
