I am a comfortably retired rocket engine machinist that worked a long carear in AeroJet Rocketdyne's Advanced Special Projects Division. My carrear of almost 25 years at this high tech facility of cutting edge technologies encompassed research and development in performance gains & durability of solid rocket, electricly augmented bi propellant Hydrazine fueled thrusters for satellites and deep space probes. In the late 80's a renewed interest in electric propulsion devices the Russians had made some gains in the 70's with, triggered research and development thru the 90's into ion and hall effect propulsion engines that use light weight Xenon gas for the fuel. These dependable, rugged, light weight electric propulsion class rocket engines can "stay on" producing thrust for months at a time. By 1998 the first ion engine was successfully used as the main propulsion system on Deep Space 1, a spacecraft who's mission was to fly to asteroid 9969 Braille then to Comet Borrelly.
