Question of the Day

I received this last night. It's a very good question.

"Hi David, I have a blog request...how to tell if a profile is real. You mentioned some in your cleanup post, any other tips? How do tributes money for the recipients? Since I'm female, I guess I don't get as much spam."

Let me start by saying I have no problem with someone selling porn clips on-line. You have a product for sale, and plenty of buyers here that are interested in such purchases. If I have a friend who is in the BDSM lifestyle, and happens to sell video clips without bombarding my news feed every five minutes with advertisements, then they'll remain on my friends list. However, there are a lot of profiles here that are created for the sole purpose of soliciting money. Those are the profiles I cull from my friends list because they clog up my news feed. Sometimes I even get copied instant messages for advertisements of one kind or another. Block, block, block.

How can you tell if a profile is fake? If the first sentence of their profile is how to buy clips, used panties, sex toys, registration for a dating site, etc... It's probably a profile that you don't want to add. I don't add a lot of the cam girls either, unless there is more to their profile than just cyber sex. Not into it. Some profiles fish for your information as well. Sometimes they'll be a hot looking female picture posted with a request for your email address. Give them your email and you'll be spammed forever. If you've added someone, watch the news feed and see what they're posting. They're pretty easy to spot after a while. Also, pay attention to any website links they've included. Some are pure scams. Don't waste your time by clicking unless you're sure it's genuine.

My personal opinion is that the spam targets here are more often men than woman. In other words, there are more gullible and desperate males here than female. However, don't confuse that with the catfish which come in any gender. There are tons of fake profiles here portraying people who don't exist. For some people it's just a game...pure fantasy, while others make their living through scamming unsuspecting victims. If you want a real eye opener in the world of online dating watch "Catfish - The TV Show". I have real life experiences of meeting women whose profile picture didn't match their actual appearance or description on their profile. My worst experience was being robbed when I went to a motel room thinking I would meet a dominant female there for some kinky fun. Instead of a woman, I was met by three dudes with knives and baseball bats who took my wallet. Lesson learned....the hard way.

Tributes can mean a couple of things. Some women here enjoy cum tributes which basically consists of a person's picture being printed and a man jacks off all over it. Not exactly my thing, but I get the kink. Tributes can also mean that you contribute/donate money for the privilege of interacting with someone. If a profile reads, "I require tribute", it means that you have to pay to play.

So in a nutshell, here's what I would recommend. Sincere profiles read well. They don't include a lot of links, ask for money, solicit your email address, credit card info, etc... On the other hand, I don't add blank profiles either. Why the hell would I add someone with no picture and no description? Waste of time.

Profiles from other countries that are written in a different language than English I'm careful with as well. If I can discern that they have a sincere interest in BDSM or kink, then I'll probably accept the invitation. Otherwise the friend request is denied.

I'm sure it sounds like I'm skeptical of everyone, and I suppose in a way I am. The more I have real interaction with someone, the more I let my guard down. It takes time to get to know a person. There are no shortcuts. If someone really wants to be my friend, they will talk to me. If not, then they aren't much of a friend, are they?

I hope this helps. Thank you for your question.
