Muhammad Ali

One warn evening in June 1965, I was on a rather formal date with my girlfriend in downtown Chicago, At about 1:00am we headed to a hotel restaurant on Michigan Avenue. As we approached the hotel we saw a bright red Cadillac convertible, top down, engine running, empty of occupants, standing in the middle the street. We laughed and wondered who would leave their car like that. We found parking for our car around the corner and walked back to the entrance. About 100 feet from the hotel entrance I spotted a tall, well dressed black man stride out of the hotel headed toward the Cadillac. Recognizing him, I blurted out in shocked surprise: "Cassius Clay!" Without missing a step, he turned and with what I took to be a friendly snarl, called out: "Muhammed Ali!" He hopped in his Caddy and drove off.
